Post 16 Production Work Planning
Research
Identify your job:
My job is to think about the camera shots to use, and to video the footage.
In my group there are three of us, which includes nayib, Isaac and me. Isaac’s role is to edit the footage after all the shots have been taken. Nayib’s job is to act in the video as the main artist.
We will organize our time effectively, because we will start as soon as possible, after the research and planning has been done. With the experience from our foundation portfolio, we have learnt how to use the time adequately in order to make a good music video before the deadline. We will arrange times for where to meet and to video the footage, conveniently so we have more than enough time to edit the footage, as that is one major task which takes a good amount of time.
For the first two weeks we will be doing all the research in order to make sure we know the different types of music videos, and have a wider knowledge of Hip Hop music videos. After this we will take on the task of planning our music video, this will take approximately two weeks. After these 2 weeks we will be in a good position to begin filming our video. It will take about a month getting in all our footage for our music video. Then after all the footage is taken, we will then start editing the video, this will take another good four weeks. Altogether the whole music video should be made in 3 months.
Example of an existing music video
Above you can see the link of a video we have chosen as an example, for our music video. We chose this video because it relates to the type of music video we are looking to create. It is a music video with the genre of Hip Hop, and uses a number of different locations. We have also chosen quite a few locations for our video. After looking at this music video and a few others, we have acknowledged the similar generic conventions, which are used in a Hip Hop music video. For example we tend to get the main artists wearing dark clothes, jewellery, getting into the face of the camera, rapping with swagger and attitude. We often get locations with vandalism, on the streets; we also get some good use of effects such as different lighting, or good scenery in the background.
Sometimes in music videos we get a narrative, which creates meaning for the audience however there are many Hip Hop music videos in which there is no narrative however meaning is still created. This meaning is created by the actions from the artist alongside the lyrics. The generic conventions of clothing, such as dark clothes or rough gangster type hoodies, help create meaning for the artist towards the audience of what type of song it will be.
